Join our Head Gardener, Daniel Ballard and learn how to care for your trees through pruning. Pruning is a horticultural practice that alters the form and growth of a plant. Based on aesthetics and science, pruning can also be considered preventive maintenance. Many problems may be prevented by pruning correctly during formative years for a tree or shrub. Learn what tools are best for pruning in this informative class.

Monarchs Across Georgia is offering two separate week-long trips to Mexico in 2012: February 4-11 and February 11-18. What makes this trip to the monarch butterfly overwintering sites unique? Our itinerary includes visits to three monarch colonies. You’ll learn about local efforts to promote sustainable and environmentally sound economic activities. We’ll also visit a school near the monarch preserves to donate books purchased through our Mexico Book Project. The emphasis will be on exploring the natural history of the region, but the trip will also include many cultural and culinary delights. This trip is limited to sixteen participants and will be filled on a first come, first served basis. (The trip is open to all adults.) Georgia certified teachers may earn five professional learning units (5 PLUs. Three partial scholarships of $1,000 each are also available to Georgia educators. Apply for a scholarship by October 15, 2011.

Have you ever wondered how weeping flowering cherries were produced on a straight trunk or how to make two different color flowers appear on one tree? How are those ‘fruit cocktail trees’ made featuring different fruit on the same tree or how to clone your favorite trees without having to root them? Grafting is a technique of tree propagation and formation that has been around for more than 2 millennia. Rob Hamilton will discuss grafting history and various uses, tools and techniques. Leave this class with the basic knowledge you need to graft your own trees.

Are you tempted by the bountiful packages of seeds you find at the local garden center, but not sure how to grow them? Or maybe you’ve tried in the past growing vegetables from seed and only experienced failure? Join Glynis and grow successful seedlings for your garden. In addition, Glynis will show you how to turn “garbage” into mini greenhouses! Seeds such as lettuce, parsley, salad greens, and flowers will be on hand for you to sow into your new “greenhouse” as well as tips on how to keep them all a a live. Please bring several clear or opaque plastic containers as you can carry home! If this class fills we will open another session the following Thursday 2/9.
