This plant can be weedy and known for its extreme invasive growth. Some call it a "Garden Thug" and a few States have labeled this plant as an invasive threat because once you have it, good luck trying to get rid of it! It is known to be poisonous if not lethal to animals, livestock, and even humans. Although the short-lived blooms are beautiful, if you consider introducing this "weed" to your landscape/property, be prepared to see it pop-up in unplanned areas as it will spread!! Don't say I didn't warn you!

Good luck trying to cut this evasive species back. This plant is non-responsive to several herbicides. Research studies at Purdue University found paraquat provided 70 to 78% control.

This plant is an herbaceous plant in the lily family (Liliaceae) that grows from bulbs with annual renewal. The bulbs are ovoid in shape and measure 0.5-1.5 inches in length. The coat of the bulb is membranous. Shiny, dark green leaves are narrow and linear with distinct white midrib. Leaves are approximately 4-12 inches long and 0.1-0.2 inch wide and are hollow in cross section. Flowers consist of 6 white petals, 0.5-0.75 inches in diameter, which collectively resemble a star. Flowers occur at the ends of leafless flowering stems (scapes) and can grow up to can grow up to 1 foot in height but are usually shorter. The umbel-like raceme contains 3-10 flowers that appear from May to June. The fruit is a 3-lobed capsule that contains several oval black seed. Emerging shoots resemble wild garlic or wild onion but lack the characteristic odor of these species. (USDA)

This plant is injured at temperatures below 5 degrees F (-15C) when planted. The plant reproduces readily by seed and bulblets and requires a warm (60 to 70F) - cool (28 to 32F) - warm (55 to 65F) annual thermoperiodic cycle. The Bulb sizes: 4/5, 5/6, 6/up cm, in circumference. Planting density: 2-3" apart, 20-25 per sq. ft. Planting depth: 5" to base of bulb. Plant in the Fall - if in Zone 3, use a lot of mulch or straw, and Zones 4 to 8 without mulch. The water requirements go from one extreme to the other: Tolerates summer drought, but requires moisture during growing season.
