Tree peonies are best grown in a sunny or semi shaded location that is sheltered from cold winds and shaded from strong afternoon sunlight. They prefer a well drained, rich fertile soil. If the soil in the location is consistently wet or damp, consider building a raised bed or mound to plant in. Also incorporate humus or compost into the native soil removed from the planting hole. Plant tree peonies so that the grafted union sits at least 4” below the soil surface. Shallow planting may hinder establishment and delay flowering.

Prune tree peonies in spring while they are still dormant, removing crossing and damaged stems to create a healthy open framework. After pruning, apply a mulch of well rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant.

I fertilize peonies after pruning in spring with a mild, organic plant food. Water new plants regularly until plants are fully established.

Tree Peonies are exceptionally hardy and disease resistant. Caution: All parts of the plant are harmful if eaten.
