Dahlias can be planted anywhere in the sunny landscape and will do well in almost any type of soil, provided it is well drained. If you are planting bulbs/tubers, these should be planted after danger of frost has passed. Improve drainage in heavy clay soils by mixing in sand or compost with the soil removed from the planting hole or in the planting bed. To plant, till or turn the bed or dig the hole to 8 inches deep and then plant the tuber with the top 4 inches below ground level and 20 inches apart. It is important to give the bulbs a good drenching immediately after planting. If you want to store your bulbs indoors during winter, lift them after the first frost and keep them in a cool, dry, frost-free place.
