Cut back the Dianthus in the fall once they have died back or in late winter/early spring before new growth starts appearing. Cut the plant back down to within 1 or 2 inches of the soil. After the first blooming in spring and early summer you can cut the plant back 1/2 its size. This will help to produce a bushier plant and more flowering throughout the summer. During the summer remove the spent flowers and cut back the longer stems with the upper few sets of leaves which helps the plant rebloom and stay bushier looking.
