No pruning is necessary on Betty Magnolia. I allow magnolias to grow into their natural shape. That being said, you can cut off damaged branches or stems any time of year and stray branches in late winter. If you want your magnolia to be a tree rather than a bush, lower branches can be removed to a desired height. It's best to do this type of pruning in late winter while the plant is dormant.

I recommend feeding 'Betty' Magnolia after it blooms in spring with a well-balanced shrub and tree food.
