In my garden in zone 8 of mid-Georgia this plant has demonstrated superior drought tolerance. The butterflies love it!

Plant Oranges And Lemons Gaillardia in a location that provides plenty of sun. It's not too finicky about soil type as long as the soil is well-drained. I grow them in clay-based soil here in mid-Georgia but always add a sandy bagged topsoil to the native clay to loosen it up and improve drainage. Consistently wet or boggy soils is a sure killer of this plant.

When growing in containers I usually deadhead faded flowers. When growing in garden beds I usually leave the plants alone, but you can deadhead if you want to encourage more flowers and extend flowering into fall. When the plant has gone dormant in late fall the dead foliage can be removed.

Gaillardias are light feeders. I usually fertilize them one time a year in spring with a mild, organic flower food.

Gaillardia have few insect or disease problems. They do not like wet feet. Consistently wet or soggy soil is a sure killer of this plant.
