Drought Tolerant Shrubs

Color Guard Yucca Using drought tolerant (xeriscaping) shrubs in the landscape makes a whole lot of sense for those who live in areas that are prone to extended periods of dry weather. They are also great for gardeners who either don't have a sprinkler system or simply don't have the time to water. Drought tolerant, or "xeriscape" shrubs don't like "wet feet", so require little if any watering once established. Drought tolerant shrubs are perfect for planting in areas of the landscape that are difficult to irrigate, or on slopes and other areas where the soil is typically dry. Never plant them in moisture-retentive soils, or low-lying areas where the soil tends to remain damp for extended periods of time after rain or irrigation. Though many drought tolerant shrubs such as yucca will require very little if any watering from the day they are planted, some may require watering until they become established. In any event, if what you are looking for is low maintenance, using drought tolerant shrubs is the way to go - and there are many to choose from!
