Why Are My Hydrangeas Wilting?

Filed Under: Perennial Plants · Keywords: Why Are, Hydrangeas, Wilting · 708 Views
I have four Hydrangeas that have been re-potted, they have a problem of wilting in direct sunlight but
perk back up after sundown.Sometimes they will do same thing in shade, or if i'ts hot outside.

Have large investment in these plants and would like to find the solution to the problem.
CAN YOU HELP.

Answer #1 · Brooks Wilson's Answer · Hi Ed,

This is usually caused by lack of water or too much direct sun.

Next time you see them wilting give them some water and see if they perk up within 30 minutes to an hour. If so, you know it's lack of water.

You mentioned that you just re-potted them. Were the plants root bound? Meaning compacted roots with very little, or no soil? If they were root bound it may take them a while to send out new feeder roots that can absorb enough water to prevent leaf wilting.

Hydrangea don't perform as well in pots as they do in the ground. The perfect spot for Hydrangea is in morning sun/afternoon shade. They don't like a lot of root competition. If planted too close to large trees they will suffer. A spot such as the east side of the house is perfect as long as there's not a huge tree near by.

If the wilting problem is caused from lack of water, adding an amendment such as peat moss to the soil will help to retain water. The soil may be too well drained.

Hope this helps you.
