Hydrangea Have Brown Curling Leaves And Holes?

Filed Under: Shrubs · Keywords: Hydrandgea, Curling, Leaves, Holes, Brown · 632 Views
What is wrong with my hydrangea leaves? They were planted as babies about 2 years ago come this fall. This year was the first year they bloomed. I 6 plants ordered from an online nursery and were supposed to be Macrophylla Hobella which i believe they are but the guy on the end is obviously not. But beautiful all the same. I started notcing holes in my leaves and now the edges are browning and curling. They get morning sun afternoon shade, we have a sprinkler system that waters 3 am every other day. They have never been fed or fertilized. Hydrangea on end that is different is not having same problem. Any suggestions?

Answer #1 · Brooks Wilson's Answer · Hi Ali,

The curling leaves could be caused by late freeze, too much sun, or possibly insects called Aphids. The holes may be caused by two different chewing insects. Caterpillars or Rose Chafers.

Here's what I would do to solve the problems:

1) Remove all damaged foliage.

2) Spray with Neem Oil. Neem Oil controls fungus, disease, and insects. Neem Oil is organic and very safe to use.

3) Fertilize with a slow release balanced fertilizer containing micro nutrients. My favorite is Dynamite 14-14-14. If you can't find this ask you local independent nurseryman for a good substitute.

Hope this helps you.

UPDATE: The hydrangeas are watered with a soaker hose so I didnt think the watering technique was issue. I removed all the dead leaves and sprayed with neem oil as recommended and they seem to be doing much better. Thanks for the suggestions

Answer #3 · Brent Wilson's Answer · From looking at the pictures it looks to me like some caterpillars might have visited the plants? This being said, sometimes hydrangea just get a little ragged looking towards the end of the season due to heat or overly saturated soil. They like moisture, but not consistently wet or soggy soil, which can cause leaf spots as are seen in your photos. Moist but well-drained soil is preferred. Either way, your hydrangeas should be going dormant sooner than later now and will lose these ugly leaves. They should emerge with fresh healthy leaves next spring.)

Answer #2 · K. Stepina's Answer · Just based on my limited experience, watering with a sprinkler is a bad idea. I was taught from a child to always water hydrangea bushes by putting the hose in at the base. It doesn't do any good to get the foliage wet and it can cause the leaves to do this. My neighbor planted one right under a rain spout that drips. I see the same leaf problem on it. The foliage that doesn't get dripped on looks fine and healthy.)

That's right. Certain plants do not like overhead irrigation. Hydrangeas are definitely on of them.
