Answer #1 · Gardenality.com's Answer · Hi Allison - This is a very good question.

Crabgrass can be a major pain in the you know what. If there is a lot of crabgrass existing in your lawn, I don't know any natural or organic product that can be used as a post-emergent to kill it. That being said, there is an organic pre-emergent you can use to control crabgrass; corn gluten meal, which offers pre-emergent control of such weeds as dandelions, crabgrass, pigweed, plantain, lambs quarters and curly dock. Even then, studies show that it take two applications per year for two to three years to get 90% control of the weeds.

There are other factors involved in growing a healthy, weed-free lawn which do not require the application of toxic chemicals. It's not just about fertilizing the grass and killing weeds. If weeds are present, it's a sign that there could be other underlying problems having to do with soil health or simply the grass type isn't suitable for the environment. So, first, you want to make sure you're growing the right grass type - one that will thrive and grow thick enough to choke out weeds. Then you want to make sure your soil is healthy enough to grow this type of grass.

I thought this was such a good question that I just went and wrote and published an article here in Gardenality about creating and maintaining a healthy soil and healthy grass. Click on the link below to read it.
