Chason Arthur's Answer · During a hot and rainy summer it might be impoosible to stop brown patch from developing in you lawn. However, during seasons in which we experience average rainfall, there are some preventive measures you can take to keep fungus or disease out of your lawn.
Here's some tips:
- Water or irrigate your lawn in the morning hours to allow any water on turf to dry during the day. Water left standing overnight on turf can and probably will cause development of fungus and disease.
- Plant your lawn in well-drained soils to avoid root rot and other diseases caused by wet feet. There are no turf grasses that we know of suitable for growing in consistently wet soil - and even if there were who would want to trudge through the muck to mow it?
- Make sure you select the right lawn grass for your climate and soil type.
- Mow grass only when dry.
- Mow lawn frequently to avoid clumping of discharged clippings. Do not leave clumps of grass clippings in the lawn - rake them up and add them to your compost pile.
- When a fungus such as brown or dollar spot appears, avoid mowing or walking through effected areas as this can spread fungus all over the lawn.
At first signs of dead or dying spots, consult with your local nurseryman. Treat for fungus as soon as possible. A stitch in time saves nine! When using chemicals, always follow instructions on product label for mixing and/or application.)
