Answer #1 · Maple Tree's Answer · Hi Steve-When using a Weed and Feed product on St. Augustine grass you are generally applying one of the ingredients at the wrong time. Fertilization of St. Augustine is normally done in the spring after greening up. Pre-emergent Weed and Feed products would be used earlier in the year to control weeds that have not germinated yet. If you live in a cooler climate you may want to use a pre-emergent weed killer on its own and fertilize in the spring. St. Augustine goes dormant for the winter and you don't want to stimulate new growth early that may be killed by frost. If you want to use a Weed and Feed with a pre-emergent weed control formula, those that kill weed seed before germination, they would be applied from January to March. Those that contain a post-emergent weed control would be applied in the spring/early summer once the grass has greened up and weeds have germinated. It is important to make sure the Weed and Feed product is specifically formulated for St. Augustine grass containing the herbicide Atrazine that is safe to use on St. Augustine grass. Other Weed and Feed products using other chemicals can be harmful and can kill your St. Augustine. Always apply these products carefully as noted on the product label and make sure the product is formulated and stated safe for use on St. Augustine. Once weeds are controlled a properly cared for, healthy, thick, St. Augustine lawn is the best deterrent against weed growth.
