Maple Tree's Answer · Hi Esther-The Gold Breeze Maiden Grass will turn a light tan as it dies back in the winter. In late winter to early spring they can be pruned off 6 inches from the ground for a nice neat look. You don't want to wait too long into spring as the new growth may start to appear and could be damaged when the entire plant is cut back. If your grass clump is large you can make the cutting back much easier if you tie the arching stems into a bundle with some rope or twine. Once tied up into a bundle it will be much easier to cut through the base of the bundle with hedge shears.
