Rejuvination Pruning Of A Very Large Crape Myrtle

Filed Under: Pruning · Keywords: Rejuvination, Pruning, Very, Large, Crape Myrtle · 257 Views
We have just moved into a house with a crepe mrytle that is about 20 feet high and behind a live oak. If it does bloom, it can't be seen from the ground. The lowest foliage is about ten feet or more up. We'd like to cut it way down (renovation pruning?), but we aren't sure if it will bloom or flourish even so as it is in almost total shade.

Thanks.

Answer #1 · Brooks Wilson's Answer · If the Crape Myrtle is in nearly all shade it won't bloom much, if any. Crape Myrtles require a good bit of strong direct sun to bloom well. If it was me, I would remove the Crape Myrtle and replace it with a Camellia. Camellias bloom heavy for 3 months or so. In Zone 8 the Camellia Sasanqua blooms in Fall/Early Winter, and the Camellia Japonica blooms in Late Winter/Early Spring. Camellias can be tree formed in single or multi trunk form. Make sure to do a little research to find the right Camellia for you. Certain ones grow as low a 4', and others can grow up to 20'. Many different flower colors to choose from.)

Answer #2 · Brent Wilson's Answer · If you decide to remove the crape myrtle by cutting it down to the ground, pour straight glyphosate (Killzall, Roundup, GlyPhosel) on the stump just after cutting it. This might prevent suckers from emerging. Or you can have a stump grinding company come in to remove the stump and the roots. You could attempt to transplant it to a sunnier location but would probably need a good size front end loader to do it right and successfully.)
