Fragrant Shrubs That Grow To Four Feet In Height

Filed Under: Pruning · Keywords: Fragrant, Shrubs, Four, Feet, Height · 243 Views
I've just taken out some yews which were on the West and North of my screened in back porch.

The west side of the porch receives about 6-8 hours of sun during the summer months. The north side of the porch receives morning sun to about 2:00 and then becomes shaded for the better part of the day. I live in Kansas City, Missouri.

What type of aromatic/flowering shrubbery would be best suited for this area. I'm not interested in anything that need a lot of pruning and prefer nothing that gets higher than 4 ft or so. I'm thinking a butterfly type bush might work.

Answer #1 · Brooks Wilson's Answer · Hi Glenn,

If you are in USDA Zone8a you can use Jubiliation Gardenia or Daisy Gardenia on the North side. Gardenias will perform well with morning sun. The Jubilation Gardenia blooms all season long and the blooms are very fragrant. On the West facing side you could use Canyon Creek Abelia. It has fragrant blooms all throughout the warm season, and has great fall color!. Both of these selections get to about 3-4' or so and require minimal maintenance. They are also evergreen!

Hope this helps you out!
