It is advisable to cut the plant back by about 1/3 in Spring before the first buds set. This will create a more compact stable plant. You don't necessarily have to prune at this time, but if you want a stonger plant it's ok.
Once the bloom clusters have faded you can snip them off just below the cluster. This will allow for new flowering side branches to develop. Deadheading like this will take stress off the plant and give you a quicker re-bloom cycle.
Later in the Summer trim off weathered foliage, faded blooms, and any dead wood. This will revitalize the plant and extend the bloom season.
Prune back the entire plant, back to the base crown, just before the first frost.
Fertilize with Triple Super Phosphate in early fall. I like the Hi-Yield brand. Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer such as granular Dynamite 13-13-13. Dynamite is the best fertilizer I've found yet. It lasts for the entire season (9 mos.), microfeeding every time the plant gets watered, whether by rain or irrigation.
Hope this helps you out!
