planted a new crape myrtle tree last spring and have question about pruning this first time. the tree is about 12ft in height at tallest branch and it's 4 trunks only about 3-4' at the thickest. should special care be taken this first year of pruning? or is it okay to prune as normally would a more mature tree? thanks.

Answer #1 · John Heider's Answer · Hi Melissa-Good pruning while crape myrtles are young will mean less maintenance when the trees are older. There is a good article here in Gardenality on correct pruning of crape myrtles. You can click on the "ARTICLES' tab above and type HOW TO PRUNE A CRAPE MYRTLE in the search box. This article will tell you the correct time of year to prune. It also has great diagrams of correct pruning. You can also click on the link below to go directly to this article.
