Answer #2 · Brent Wilson's Answer · Hi Jim - A friend of mine who lives on 10 deer infested acres has a pomegranate growing on his property and the deer haven't touched it. They nibble a little bit on the leaves but don't touch the fruit. But, like John says, during food shortage situations deer will eat almost anything. During severe drought times, we've had customers come in our nursery before who say the deer were eating their Leyland Cypress. That's got to be some hungry deer to eat something that probably tastes like a pine tree, lol. Anyway, if things get that bad for the deer, I don't mind if they eat some of my plants...they have to live too.

Answer #1 · John Heider's Answer · Hi Jim-Very few shrubs and trees are really "deer proof", but there are trees that are less likely to be damaged by deer. The Pomegranate is noted as a tree on most "deer resistant" lists as one that is rarely damaged. That said; During droughts and other food-shortage situations, deer can become more hungry and may eat plants the they would normally avoid. In situations as these it would be most likely the foliage they would graze on and not the fruit. The pomegranate fruit because of its leathery skin are not as palatable as other fruit. The visiting deer would probably move on to your neighbors fruit trees. All this said YES the pomegranate (Punica granatum) is considered by most as deer resistant.)
