My crepe myrtles were not pruned correctly and now they have the ugly stump with several smaller branches growing out from them. How can I prune these to make them pretty again; or is there a way? thank you

Answer #1 · Brent Wilson's Answer · Hi Sherry,

This is a very common problem and one we get a lot of questions on. Too many folks take a saw to their crape myrtle, cutting them back to unsightly tall stumps, before getting some advice or instructions for pruning crape myrtle correctly. They end up pruning them back way too far. There is a method for corrective pruning, though a tree that has been this severely pruned will probably not ever look as good had it been pruned correctly from the start.

Here's a link to an article that provides a method for corrective pruning.
